Notice of Regular Non-Partisan Election & Runoff Election

 

Notice is hereby given that a non-partisan election will be held between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, for the purpose of electing Mayor and town council members from Council Districts # 1, # 3, and # 5 as districts are depicted on the Single Member District Map filed in the Cheraw Town Hall.  This year voting will take place at the following county voting precincts:  Precinct #1:  Cheraw Community Center – 200 Powe Street; Precinct # 2:  Cheraw Fire Dept.  – 12 Chesterfield Highway; Precinct # 3:  First Baptist Church – 126 Greene Street, and Precinct # 4: Northeastern Technical College – 1201 Chesterfield Highway.

Persons desiring to vote in the upcoming election must be registered to vote no later than October 6, 2023.  To register one may contact the County Board of Voter Registration (623-2265).

Candidates will be placed on the ballot by Statement of Candidacy and payment of a $100 filing fee for Mayoral candidates and a $50 filing fee for council members, which must be filed with the Municipal Election Commission at the Town Hall beginning on August 28, 2023 at 8:30 a.m. and closing at 12:00 noon on September 7, 2023 in accordance with § 5-25-70 of the 1976 Code of Laws of South Carolina, as amended.

At 2:00 p.m. on said Election Day the poll managers will begin examining the absentee ballot return envelopes at each of the four respective polling places.  On Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. the Municipal Election Commission will hold a hearing to determine the validity of any challenged ballots and will certify the results of the election.

In the event of a run-off election, said election will be held on November 21, 2023, at the same locations and during the same hours.
