Incentive Program for New Retail and Commercial Businesses

The Cheraw Town Council recently passed an ordinance authorizing incentives to help attract new retail and commercial businesses to Cheraw.

House Number Service

The Town of Cheraw is offering residents a service that will allow their house number to be painted on the curb at their driveway to assist emergency personnel in locating houses. There have been several incidents where emergency personnel have had difficulty in finding houses that have no house number displayed or the incident has taken place at night when house numbers are hard to find or read.

As a result of these incidents, the Cheraw Town Council has voted to implement a service that is completely voluntary to its citizens. Residents wanting to have their house number painted on the curb can stop by the Cheraw Town Hall and fill out an application. A $10 fee will need to be paid and the Town will paint the house number on the curb.

For those residents who have no curb, you can obtain a yard house number sign by going to the Cheraw Fire Department and pay a $15 fee.

Façade Grants Available For Town Of Cheraw Businesses

The Town of Cheraw is offering businesses located within town limits a matching grant to assist in the enhancement of their building's exterior.

Grant funds from the Façade Grant Program may be used for exterior signage, awnings, painting, and doors. Interior work and roofing are not allowed under the program's guidelines. Grant awards must be matched dollar for dollar by the eligible business/property owner. The maximum grant for any one project will not exceed $1,000.00. Once the grant is awarded, the recipient must initiate façade work within 60 days or the grant will be presented to another recipient.

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis by the town's Board of Architectural Review. Priority consideration will be given to businesses that have not previously received a façade grant. Applications are available at the Cheraw Town Hall, 200 Market Street, during normal business hours. Work initiated before the board's approval will not be eligible for the façade grant. For more information about this program, contact Mike Smith at 843-537-8400.

Community Meeting Notice

Time: 7:00 pm

DHEC will hold a community meeting on November 2, 2016 at Long Middle School in Cheraw at 7 p.m., to discuss the data and the next steps to the following:

DHEC has recently discovered polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other chemical contamination in a drainage ditch behind the former Burlington Industrial Fibers James Plant located at 650 Chesterfield Highway in Cheraw, S.C. Contamination has also been found in sediments and soils in and along the ditch downstream to the Great Pee Dee River three miles away. This includes the downstream portions of Wilson’s Branch and Huckleberry Branch. PCBs are man-made chemicals that were manufactured and used in many industrial applications from 1929 until they were banned from being made in the United States in 1979. The reason that PCBs were banned was because of concern for the lasting effects they have on the environment.   Full Story ››
