Public Meeting on Proposed Chesterfield County 1% Sales Tax

Town Council voted to approve Resolution 04-2022 at this month's council meeting.  The resolution is to encourage residents of Chesterfield County to vote "yes" on a Special 1% Sales Tax Referendum on the November Ballot that would fund a The Highway 9 Widening Project from Pageland to Chesterfield, making Highway 9 a four lane road across Chesterfield County.

Quick Facts:
  • The proposed tax will appear on the November Ballot as a referendum and must be passed by the popular vote of county residents.
  • The proposed tax would be used to help fund the SC Highway 9 Road Widening Project, which would turn Hwy 9 into a four lane road from Pageland to Chesterfield. The project will help provide for the long term economic health of Chesterfield County and Cheraw by providing a faster and safer transportation route through the county.
  • There is currently a 1% Sales Tax in Chesterfield County that funded the Chesterfield County School Districts Bonds, this sales tax expires in August of 2025.
  • The sales tax on the November Ballot is not an additional sales tax, it will go in effect at the end of the current sales tax.
The County has been working on this project for many years, with numerous public meetings and studies on the feasibility over the last two years.  It is hopeful that federal funding will be used on this project, freeing up extra funds generated by the sales tax for other paving needs in Chesterfield County.

For more information there will be a public meeting held at the Cheraw Town Hall (200 Market Street) on October 26, 2021 at 5:30PM.  Please bring questions or comments on the proposed Highway 9 Road Widening Project or the proposed Special Sales Tax.
