Cheraw maintains status as a Fire Safe SC Community

The Cheraw Fire Department is proud to announce that Cheraw has been named a Fire Safe SC Community for the second year in a row.

Chief Murray recently accepted the award at the 2021 Fire/Rescue conference in Columbia. "I am very proud of the work our department put in to meet the requirements for the award" said Chief Murray. There are 14 different standards that fire departments are required to meet to qualify for the award. The requirements range from holding an open house or virtual event to developing a social media presence; all for promoting fire and life safety messages. The department must also track how effective these programs are at reaching citizens.  In addition, there are four different classes someone from the department must attend each year. Lastly, departments must report all their incidents to the National Fire Incident Reporting System and use this data to identify community risk within the fire district. The Cheraw Fire Department was 1 of only 57 departments in 2019 and 1 of only 80 departments in 2020 throughout the whole state to receive this award.
