December News From the Town: Grants, Riverside Park Improvements, Soccer Champions, and more!

News from the Town

A big congratulations to the Cheraw All Stars 10&U who defeated Seneca 3-2 to claim the State Championship Title in Bluffton.  The victors returned to Town in style with a police escort to the Community Center, cheered on by local residents.  The 15&U snagged runner up in the State Championship.  A special shoutout to our 8&U Team that finished as the Eastern District Runner Up!  It was a great season, and we want to thank all of our coaches, volunteers, and parents who take the time to make these seasons possible.  Congratulations!

We are excited to announce that Cheraw has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to begin a three phase Neighborhood Revitalization Project around the Agerton Street Neighborhood. The first phase of this project will focus on the demolition of dilapidated properties, the repaving of local streets, and neighborhood security improvements.  Community Development Block Grants are federally funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development and awarded by the South Carolina Department of Commerce.  This was a competitive grant and we look forward to seeing work begin.  After completion of this project the Town will seek additional CDBG grants for other neighborhoods.

The Erosion Control Project at Riverside Park is drawing to a close and the new improvements are gorgeous! New benches, walking paths, lighting, and two handicap accessible fishing docks have been installed.  Only a few finishing touches remain, and everything should be ready to go in early 2021. These improvements were funded by a combination of grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Duke Energy Foundation.
For over 40 Years the Town of Cheraw has been a designated "Tree City USA" and we look forward to continuing this tradition.  The first Friday of every December is Arbor Day in South Carolina, and this year our Parks and Grounds Department celebrated by planting 6 ceremonial Crepe Myrtles at Riverside Park.  These Crepe Myrtles adorn the 3 new benches added to the Riverfront.  Mayor Ingram was present to issue the annual Arbor Day Proclamation.  In addition to new trees by the river front, 50 more trees will soon find homes along Cheraw’s Streets and roadways.
