Cheraw Celebrates Arbor Day!

The air was cool but the atmosphere was cheery as local residents, The Mayor, and members of Cheraw's Town Council, Parks and Grounds, and Public Works gathered to plant a tree in honor of Mr. Frank Laney.

Mr. Frank was dedicated to the greenery of Cheraw, especially in the Downtown area.  As local resident Cheryl Postlewaite noted, "he was the only person I ever knew who actually cared about pruning!".  It was only natural that at this year's Arbor Day Celebration, the Cheraw Parks and Grounds, led by Mr. Carl J. Compton, would plant a sawtooth oak in his honor.

In addition to the sawtooth oak, other trees will be planted in Huckleberry Park to help restore it.  The park infrastructure was removed following PCB cleanup activities in 2018 and 2019.

Cheraw has always loved its trees, and one of the first public campaigns by the local Civic League was to protect the trees on Third Street from being removed.

The trees for Huckleberry Park and other parts of Town were received through a grant by Palmetto Pride.
