GW Long Memorial PresbyterianOne of Cheraw's most influential residents was G.W. Long, and the church shown in this photo honors the man and the role he played here. Established as the Second United Presbyterian Church in 1881, the church was renamed the George Waldo Long Memorial Presbyterian Church, honoring the Reverend Long who served as the church's pastor from 1908 until his death in 1943. Rev. Long and his wife, Lillian Bull, were instrumental in revitalizing Coulter Memorial Academy, the first school for African Americans in Chesterfield County.
