235 Third St. (c. 1823) The Lafayette House
The house was built by Dr. William Ellerbe, and was the site of
a public reception for Gen. Lafayette on his 1825 visit to the United
States. Dr. Archibald Malloy remodeled the house after his marriage
to Henrietta Coit in 1843. She was originally from New London, Conn.,
and this is probably the reason for the house's New England appearance.
The interesting cross halls and balustrade roof were formed during
the 1852 remodeling.
