We are pleased that you are considering a visit to Cheraw. The information below is designed to help you plan your trip. Please let us know if you have special interests or needs that we might be able to help you with by completing the visitor's request form. Guides and private homes are by reservation only. Please contact the Fish Hatchery and parks directly.

A free brochure with a self-guided tour of the historic district can be download here and is also available at the Chamber of Commerce at 221 Market Street. Keys to Old St. David’s Church and the Lyceum Museum may also be picked up at the Chamber if you would like to visit these sites without a guide. We also have available pamphlets on Cheraw’s role in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, as well as information on sites associated with Cheraw native Dizzy Gillespie and with the years when cotton was “king”. We have available tour notes on SC 9 and US 1 in our area. Cheraw is part of the National Civil War Discovery Trail, The South Carolina Cotton Trail, and the Carolinas’ Revolutionary War Trail.

A tour guide is available through the Bureau for $2/person, minimum of 10 people. The usual tour includes the historic district, Old St. David’s Church, the Lyceum Museum, and the Town Green. This takes approximately one and a half hours, but can be adjusted to suit your schedule. Short walking tours are another possibility, and longer tours are also available that can include other public buildings. Drivers and the group leader are free. Arrangements can be made to tour one of Cheraw’s private residences for $3/person/house (subject to availability).

The Cheraw Museum and History Company provides tours and a tour of an antebellum historic home. Student and group rates are available. (843)921-2090. (Check for availability.)

The Ingram River Artifacts Room on the Town Green is located in Miller Ingram’s law office and is open during regular business hours. Free (843)537-6565.

Many groups like to visit Cheraw’s unique downtown shops. A listing of these shops is in the Visitor’s Guide.

We have several great restaurants capable of handling large groups that visitors enjoy. Please let us know your needs, and we will be glad to advise you. Of Cheraw’s restaurants capable of handling a full bus load or more, the Mayflower, Sharecroppers, Chinatown Buffet, and Bill’s BBQ are open for lunch and supper. The Country Kitchen and The River’s Edge can handle a busload for lunch. There are several other restaurants that can handle smaller groups and enough clustered downtown restaurants for dining “on your own”. RawTown Coffee is fun for snacks. Private dining is available in a neo-classical home catered by Hidden Treasures. Please call ahead to ensure fast service.

Cheraw State Park’s staff can tailor a program to suit your interests on a variety of subjects. The park features hiking trails, boating, picnicking and play areas as well as golf and cabins. The Park is three miles south of Cheraw on US 52. Please contact them directly at (843)921-9656.

The Cheraw Fish Hatchery gives free tours for groups. The hatchery is four miles southwest of Cheraw on US 1. Call 843 537-7628. The site features 31 ponds and a picnicking area. Sugar Loaf Mountain, 17 miles south of Cheraw just off US 1 in Sand Hills State Forest, is great fun for children and adults. The staff can sometimes give short programs. 843 498-6478. Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, 25 miles south on US 1 has free public programming and features a wildlife drive, bird watching and photography bind. Call (843)335-8401. Visitors can watch syrup or milling operations at Blizzard Branch Milling and Syrup Co. Just off US 1 about 20 miles south of Cheraw (843)335-6109. McLeod Farms has a store and car and farm museum in McBee.
